Recently, Ourmexico's Features Writer, Dick Davis, drove 6047 miles inside Mexico, from Nogales to Oaxaca. Like the Biblical Noah, he took 40 days. His ark was the Grand Marquis, which consumed 266 gallons of gas. Highway toll charges cost $386 and of course there was insurance, an extra $235. It was a journey of adventure and discovery. Dick has chronicled his travels in 19 segments. "I don't call them chapters, that sounds too organized, and it's not. It's like travel itself. They're irregular. Some are about places, others about people. Some pieces are long, others short. I started with an outline, places I wanted to see, but I changed course with opportunity. I found unexpected history and hidden places that are only hidden to travelers without a car." Dick headed in one direction and wound up backtracking. He became an impromptu English teacher in Oaxaca, dressed as a miner in Real del Monte and dropped 1300 feet to the bottom of Mina Rica. He revved up an ATV and rumbled across the cobblestones in the mountain town of Regla. And then he was stunned by the murals at Ixmiquilpan. Not having a fixed plan was his greatest asset. His marathon journal mimics the best in travel, adventure and discovery. For the curious: average hotel cost per night: $55. Auto expense: per day average, $29.95 or 20 cents per mile. Meals, gifts, entertainment (mariachis and guides): $70 per day. Total: $6160, average per day: $155.
